In her debut collection, Moroccan American author Sara Filali begins with this timeless call, translating and preserving the folktales of the greatest storyteller she knows, her grandmother, Zohra Zaoui. Born and raised in the Jebala region of Morocco, Zaoui learned the art of storytelling by listening. From elders, neighbors, and family members, she absorbed a rich oral tradition and passed it down to her children and grandchildren, story by story.

These tales carry the heartbeat of a people. They are filled with ghouls and magic, devotion and deception, love, danger, prayer, and endurance. Filali transcribes and translates her grandmother’s stories into English in honor of a village woman who never learned to read or write, ensuring that this living folktale legacy can travel beyond borders and generations.
